Putin signs the law obliging prisoners to take part in the war in Ukraine

President Russia Vladimir Putin signed a law (Law) requiring that every detainee with the status of a Russian citizen sentenced to imprisonment for a serious crime, be called to military service in connection with the mobilization for Ukraine.

As reported CNNOn Monday (07/11/2022), the law applies to Russian citizens whose sentences have not been abolished or have been sentenced to extraordinary crimes such as murder, robbery, theft, drug trafficking and other serious crimes.

The law, signed by Putin, allows the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of people who have been sentenced to probation or recently released from prison, who had previously been barred from joining the army.

The group of prisoners excluded from the law are those convicted of sexual offenses against minors, cases of treason of the state, cases of espionage or terrorism.

Prisoners convicted of attempted murder of government officials, hijacking of aircraft, extremist activity and illegal handling of nuclear and radioactive materials are also excluded.

Putin on Friday (4/11) said the Kremlin has mobilized an additional 18,000 troops, surpassing the target of 300,000 troops to fight in Ukraine, from Russia’s general male population.

This was announced earlier this week by the Russian Defense Ministry partial military mobilizationwhich includes sending subpoenas, was suspended after Moscow authorities said the target of recruiting 300,000 employees was met.

But the partial military mobilization order ordered by Putin will expire only when the Russian president signs the order to stop the mobilization in an official decree. Before that, Putin has the right to recruit more people to join the army in the future.
