Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin asked BRICS members consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to produce vaccines made in Russia. Currently Russia has developed the Sputnik V vaccine which is claimed to be able to ward off the Covid-19 virus up to 92% effectively.
This was conveyed by Putin moment bspoke at the BRIC Summit which was held online on Tuesday (17/11). Putin encourages four other BRICS members to produce and distribute vaccines made in Russia.
“Russia has a covid-19 vaccine that works effectively and safely. It is very important to unite so that the mass production of this product is widely circulated,” Putin said as quoted by Antara. AFP.
Currently Russia has agreements with India and Brazil on clinical trials of the Covid-19 Sputnik V virus, and agreements on vaccine production processes with China and India.
However, Putin did not specify the broader efforts between the five BRICS countries in mass production of vaccines, including on the terms of commercial requirements.
Russia registered two vaccines for the Covid-19 virus, in August, Russia announced that it had registered the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, before large-scale clinical trials. Then in October 2020, Putin also announced that Russia had registered another vaccine named EpiVac Corona.
Russia made a plea to WHO to speed up registration and prequalification of the Sputnik V vaccine, which according to Russia is 92% effective against Covid-19. Although this step is considered by Russia to be stepping too fast in the process of producing a vaccine because it is feared that there is a dangerous risk.
In addition to the two Russian vaccines, now the world is also shocked by the latest reports about western-made vaccines, namely Pfizer and BioNTech, which in early November announced their vaccines were 90 percent effective against Covid-19. In addition, the latest US company Moderna claims its vaccine is 94.5% effective against Covid-19.
