Russian President Vladimir Putin made this point while commenting on a range of demographic issues he said his country was facing, including the recent increase in the death toll.
Speaking to reporters as part of his annual press conference on Thursday (12/23/2021), the Russian leader touched on the drop in life expectancy that has come as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Putin noted the median age at which people died was 71.5 last year and dropped to 70.1 this year.

“From a humanitarian and geopolitical perspective, considering the country’s people of 146 million for such a large area is simply not enough,” Putin said.
Putin said this figure is also detrimental economically because the country does not have enough manpower for its workforce.
“We now have around 81 million people of working age. We must seriously increase it in 2024 and 2030. That is one of the factors of economic growth,” he explained.
