Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Moscow would closely monitor food exports to “hostile” countries that have imposed sanctions on Moscow in connection with its attack on Ukraine.

“Given the global food shortages, we will have to be cautious about deliveries abroad this year and closely monitor the export of such products to countries that are clearly hostile to us,” Putin said.

Putin also said that Russia’s food production capacity could fully meet domestic needs and called on officials to be more active in replacing imports.

The Russian president also stressed the need to resolve logistics and insurance issues in order to resume fertilizer exports.

“It simply came to our notice then [mēslošanas līdzekļu] deficit and people will buy them. “No one wants to starve,” Putin said.

Russia is a major producer of fertilizers.
