Invasion issue Russia to Ukraine emerged with the deployment of Russian troops around the border. Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that he did not want war in Europe.
Reported from DWOn Wednesday (16/2/2022), Putin made this statement amid concerns from Western countries about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is a pro-western state.
Putin made the remarks after meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is visiting Moscow in a bid to ease tensions. The ongoing crisis on the Russia-Ukraine border dominated the agenda of the two leaders’ meeting.
In a joint press conference after the meeting on Tuesday (15/2) local time, Scholz stated ‘it is our absolute duty as heads of government so that Europe does not see an escalation towards war’.
Putin later reiterated: “We don’t want war in Europe.”
Putin later referred to Szholz’s comments about ‘people of this generation find it difficult to imagine war in Europe’.
“That’s exactly why we made our proposal, to start a process of discussion on equal security for everyone,” Putin said.
Scholz said a high-level dialogue between Russia and partners in Europe is very important to achieve stability in moving forward.
“The most important thing is that we manage relations between countries with good discussions with each other,” Szholz said, expressing his relief to be able to meet Putin in person.
“We are ready for further cooperation. We are ready to take the path of negotiations,” Putin said at the same press conference.
Putin also talked about NATO. He stated ‘countries have the right to join military alliances as our NATO colleagues have always defended, but it is also important to maintain the security of a country not at the expense of the security of other countries’.
“We are also willing to continue the discussion process,” he added.
