Extreme nationalist and former henchman of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Igor Girkin, is released from prison. The matter was reported by several Russian media based on information from the Russian Telegram news channel Shot.

According to Shot, Girkin’s lawyers managed to get the proper permits from all the necessary agencies. As a result, Girkin’s prison sentence will be replaced by service in a “special operations zone” [Venäjän nimitys Ukrainan sodan rintama-alueelle].

The Russian authorities have not commented on the matter. Girkin’s wife Miroslava Reginskaja deny the information. According to him, Girkin is and will remain in prison.

Girkin, also known as Strelkov, was arrested a year ago in July. Former rebel leader Girkin, who demanded a tougher line from Putin, received a four-year prison sentence in January for inciting extremism.

According to Reginskaja, it is not even possible for those convicted of inciting extremist thinking to replace their sentence with frontline service.

In April, Girkin begged Putin for mercy and asked to go to the front in Ukraine.

In August, the Russian Prison Service found Girkin to be a “prisoner prone to escape”. According to Shot’s information, the rating was removed a few days later.
