/ world today news/ Russian President Vladimir Putin is waiting until March 31 for a report from the government, the Bank of Russia and Gazprom on changing the currency of payment in rubles for gas supplies to hostile countries, it follows from the list of instructions of the head of state after a meeting with members of the cabinet.
The document, published on the Kremlin website, states that the government, together with the Central Bank and Gazprom, is instructed to “adopt a set of measures to change the currency of payment for natural gas supplies to the countries of the European Union and other countries, which have introduced restrictive measures against Russian citizens and Russian legal entities in Russian rubles.”
The president expects a report on the instructions by March 31 and monthly thereafter.
Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Central Bank chief Elvira Nabiulina and Gazprom chief Alexei Miller were named as responsible.
The government must also approve a directive to amend Gazprom’s current gas supply contracts in terms of changing the currency of payment for them to the Russian ruble.
According to the list of instructions, this is required “while maintaining the volumes, prices and pricing principles established in the contracts” until March 31.
In addition, the Bank of Russia, together with the Council of Ministers, must ensure the possibility of making payments under gas contracts converted into payment for supplies in rubles, including the purchase of Russian rubles from energy buyers on the domestic foreign exchange market. The deadline for the implementation of this order is also set until March 31.
Earlier, the Ministry of Finance expressed confidence in the “adjustment” of the West to pay for gas in rubles.
We recall that Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian side refuses to accept payment for gas supplies in currencies that have been compromised, including dollars and euros, payment for fuel will be accepted in rubles.
The head of the Bundestag’s energy and climate protection committee, Klaus Ernst, said paying for Russian gas in rubles was technically possible, but it would force the European Union to circumvent its own sanctions, leading to renewed discussions on an energy boycott by Russia. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said German companies should not pay for Russian gas supplies in rubles.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo said he expects a reduction in gas prices when paying for supplies in rubles. Austrian Chancellor Karl Neuhammer opposed the boycott of oil and gas supplies from Russia.
The Polish energy company PGNiG has announced that it is not possible to switch to rubles in populated areas. Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša said that no one in Europe will pay for gas in rubles. In Japan, Russia’s decision caused misunderstanding.
Bulgaria announced its readiness to pay for gas in rubles. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called Moscow’s decision a “problem”. The Kremlin has promised to take into account Serbia’s concerns about paying for Russian gas supplies.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that Europe has nothing to replace Russian gas with, neither now nor in the next five years.
