Russian President Vladimir Putin has a list of countries according to which their eventual membership in NATO would be a threat to the national security of the Russian Federation if the Alliance continues to expand eastward.
Moreover, Putin does not want countries that are under Russian influence in one form or another to join the Euro-Atlantic bloc.
For this reason, the Kremlin has already warned Finland and Sweden that they will take “military action” if the two Scandinavian countries decide to join NATO.
Bosnia and Herzegovina can now be considered their company. Russia’s ambassador to Sarajevo has officially informed the representative authorities in the Western Balkans that “Ukraine’s fate will follow” if negotiations are finalized and they become members of the Alliance, and that Moscow “will not hesitate to act.”
We showed what happened to Ukraine. If we feel any threat, we will react immediately, warned the ambassador of the local FTV Igor Kalabuhov.
He said Russia “has no plans” at this stage, but stressed that this depends on the follow-up of NATO and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
We do not have a plan, but we will respond when a situation arises, Kalabukhov was quoted as saying by the media.
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia are currently candidate countries for full membership in the Alliance, BTA reports.
