Russian president alludes to Islamophobia in his annual press conference
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin alluded to Islamophobia in his annual press conference. He emphasized that the action insulting the Prophet Muhammad is not a form of freedom of expression.
“(The insult to the Prophet Muhammad) is a violation of religious freedom and a violation of the sanctity of those who embrace Islam,” Putin was quoted as saying by a Russian news agency. TASS, Friday (24/12).
Putin said the ummah and leaders of the Islamic world should remind officials of non-Muslim countries about this. He considered it an effort to fight Islamophobia.
Putin said he respects and appreciates artistic freedom in general. But he warned, it has limits and should not violate other freedoms. Putin explained that Russia has developed into a diverse country. Russian citizens, he said, are used to respecting each other’s traditions.
However, Putin sees, the culture of respecting differences as happened in Russia, is not seen in a number of other countries in the world. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan welcomed Putin’s statement that insulting the Prophet Muhammad was not a form of freedom of expression.
