The Russian president arrived in Mongolia for an official visit Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader’s plane landed at Ulaanbaatar airport on Monday 9/2 and his visit will last two days.
His schedule includes bilateral meetings, including with the Mongolian president Ukhnagin Khuralsukh, as well as the signing of some documents and the laying of flowers at the monument of the Marshal of the Soviet Union, Georgy Zhukov.
The Russian president traveled to Mongolia despite an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes in the Ukraine war. The warrant obliges the court’s 124 member states to arrest Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he is found on their soil. The ICC has stated that because Mongolia is a member country, it must implement its decisions.
Ukraine also last week called on Mongolia to arrest Putin under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in 2023, accusing him of war crimes by illegally transporting hundreds of children from Ukraine to Russia. The Kremlin has rejected the accusation, saying the ICC ruling was politically motivated and saying it is not concerned about Putin’s visit to Mongolia.
Asked whether there had been discussions with Mongolian authorities about the ICC warrant, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week that “all aspects of the visit have been thoroughly discussed.”
Connecting link of the natural gas pipeline between Russia and China
China and Russia are in the final stages of finalizing the contract for the Power of Siberia-2 natural gas pipeline, which will run through Mongolia. This is a particularly important project that will transport large quantities of natural gas from Russia to China. In fact, it is expected to reach the planned capacity of 38 billion cubic meters in 2025.
The project has been under discussion for several years, but has taken on new importance as Russia has turned to China to replace Europe as its main gas export customer following Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine.
Putin said on the eve of his visit to Mongolia that preparatory work, including feasibility studies and technical studies, is progressing according to schedule.
