FLY – Martial law was imposed in four regions that Russia recently chose to be part of in the conflict with Ukraine.

The decision was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (10/19/2022).

“The Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, imposed martial law when they joined Russia,” Putin said.

“Hence, the decision provides a legal basis for remaining under Russian sovereignty,” he said at a meeting of the National Security Council.

The document signed by Putin to introduce martial law went into effect at midnight on Thursday (20/10/2022).

The decree also orders various parts of the Russian government to submit appropriate action plans within three days.

Last month, people in four former Ukrainian territories voted in a referendum to ask Moscow to accept them as part of Russia.

Ukraine rejected the vote as illegitimate and promised to use military force to seize the territory.

On Wednesday, officials from the Kherson region reported that Ukrainian troops appeared to be deployed for a large-scale attack on the capital Kherson.

The local government announced this week the transfer of residents from the city to the east side of the Dnieper due to the threat posed by the forces of Kiev.
