On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the possibility of creating a “safe zone” inside Ukrainian territory.
Putin said in a speech to a number of Russian officials: “If the Ukrainian counter-attacks continue, we will study the creation of safe zones inside Ukrainian territory.”
He stressed that Russia has strengthened border security with Ukraine, which in recent weeks has launched attacks inside Russian territory close to the border.
Will the contact between Olaf Scholz and Putin make any breakthrough in the crisis?
The Russian president stated that his country is “gradually disarming Ukraine” through the military offensive that began in February 2022.
He admitted that the Ukrainian counterattack, which began a few days ago to regain territory controlled by Moscow’s forces, was “widespread”, but it did not achieve any success, as he put it.
He said that the Ukrainian forces suffered heavy losses during their counterattack, adding: “Ukraine has lost between 25 percent and 30 percent of the equipment it got from the West.”
Putin confirms that Ukraine has begun its counterattack
The Russian president said: “The Ukrainian counterattack is going in multiple directions and began on June 4, but it has not achieved any success.”
And he considered that “Ukraine’s losses are ten times greater than the Russian losses. Ukraine lost 160 tanks, compared to 54 that Russia lost.”
On the other hand, Putin accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting the Kakhovka Dam with HIMARS missiles.
