Russia has stepped up its rhetoric in recent weeks, claiming without evidence that Ukraine was preparing to detonate a low-powered radioactive device on its territory, leading Kiev and Western observers to believe that Putin himself could prepare such a attack.
Putin says that Russia knew “about the incident with the preparation of the so-called ‘dirty bomb'” and that Russia knew “where in general it was prepared”.
However, he did not provide any proof of the existence of the “dirty bomb”.
Kiev vehemently denied the allegations and claimed that Russia was using nuclear blackmail to try to block Western support for a Ukrainian counter-offensive against the Russian military.
US President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he had spent “a lot of time” debating whether Russia could prepare to use a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine.
“Let me just say that Russia would make an incredibly serious mistake if it were to use a tactical nuclear weapon,” he told reporters.
Putin said in a speech Thursday that Western claims about Russia’s possible use of nuclear weapons were intended to scare his supporters, emphasizing “how bad Russia is.”
“We never said anything about the possible use of Russian nuclear weapons, but we only hinted in response to statements from Western leaders,” Putin said.
Putin struck the West and its perceived “hegemony”, saying it was the “most dangerous” decade for the world since World War II.
“We are on a historical limit: perhaps the most dangerous, unpredictable and at the same time most important decade since the end of the Second World War is ahead”.
Putin also claimed that the Russian economy had survived the sanctions imposed on it by the West after the war began.
