President of Russia Vladimir Putin say that Russia can change its military doctrine by introducing the possibility of a preemptive strike to disarm the enemy, with clear reference to nuclear attack.
The news agency reports it AFP extensionOn Saturday (10/12/2022), Putin said this in response to a question from a reporter who asked him to clarify his statement earlier this week about the use nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters just days after warning that the risk of nuclear war was increasing but that Russia would not strike first, Putin said Moscow was considering adopting what it called Washington’s concept of a preemptive strike.
“First of all, United States of America they have a pre-emptive strike concept. Secondly, the United States is developing a disarmament strike system,” Putin told reporters in Kyrgyzstan.
Putin said Moscow may need to think about adopting “US ideas to ensure its own security”.
“We’re just thinking about it,” he said.
“If a potential adversary believes it is possible to use the pre-emptive strike concept, but we don’t, then that makes us think about the threat such ideas pose to us,” he said.
Put in says Russia’s cruise missiles and hypersonic systems are “more modern and even more efficient” than those of the United States.
