When you made the film about Vladimir Putin, you showed Putin in it at the beginning of his reign. Was he any different from Putin we know today?
There is an opinion that when a person is born and matures, he does not change, only his features are manifested. I studied in St. Petersburg for a long time, not far from where Putin lived. When you look at those places, it’s a part of the city where all the dirt is market, homeless… It’s a neighborhood where you grow up in a semi-minimal environment. When I saw it, it was clear to me what kind of person Putin was, and then he did not change.

The film you are talking about is a film about his early days, when he was expelled from Berlin and even became the head of a taxi service. Interestingly, one of the film’s characters, Nikolai Andrushenko, was murdered after filming. He was not a very honest man, but he knew Putin and said very interesting things in the film. I don’t think they forgave him.
Do you think he was murdered for your film?
I’m almost sure of that. Half a year passed, they didn’t do it right away, they waited a while, but the retribution came.

I read an essay by Vladimir Sorokin, who thinks Putin was someone else from the beginning, open in communication, serious and equipped with a sense of humor…

Russia wants to be an empire, it has a complex of messiahship, it constantly proclaims “Gayropa”, Jewish conspiracies, conspiracies. The worst thing is that Western leaders knew everything.
