The president, who spoke at the international forum “Russia, a sporting power,” recalled that this destructive policy promotes unnatural norms and pseudo-freedoms, and denies traditional values, the Sputnik news agency highlighted this Thursday.
For the president, sport must be, above all, “free and honest, imbued with the spirit of friendship and unity.” The initiatives proposed by Russia are additional opportunities for athletes to demonstrate their skills in areas where sport is, above all, outside of politics, he stressed.
Putin denounced that the Russian athletes who participated in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games felt pressured, and announced that he would later present some awards to the Paralympians in the Kremlin.
In September, Russia’s president stated that the ban on Russian athletes participating in international competitions under the national flag violates Olympic principles regarding the politicization of sport.
In December 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced that athletes from Russia and Belarus could only participate in the 2024 Paris Games with neutral status, without a national flag or anthem, would not appear in the official medal table or attend the opening gala.
Furthermore, Russian and Belarusian athletes had to avoid at all times expressing themselves in favor of the special military operation that Russia has continued in Ukraine since February 2022.
