Russian President Vladimir Putin gave North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a luxurious Russian car. With this he openly defied UN sanctions and the close bond between the two leaders was strengthened.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia’s state news agency RIA that the car, an Aurus Senat limousine, previously belonged to Putin himself, Reuters reported.
Peskov claimed that Putin gifted the car to Kim after showing it to him during a visit to Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome last September.
“So this decision was made,” Peskov said, according to Reuters. “North Korea is our neighbor and we intend to, and will continue, to develop our relations with all neighbors, including North Korea.”
Korean Workers’ Party officials, including Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, accepted the writ on his behalf on Sunday, state news agency KCNA reported. She said the gift served as a reminder of the “special personal relationships” between the two leaders, according to the publication.

The gift is likely to have violated the UN ban on transporting luxury goods and vehicles to North Korea. The ban was part of several major sanctions against North Korea in 2006 to punish it for its nuclear program.
This would not be the first time Kim Jong Un has flouted sanctions. He is known to be a fan of luxury vehicles and has been seen with a Mercedes, a Rolls-Royce, a luxurious Maybach and several Lexus SUVs over the years, according to various reports.
The gift highlights the increasingly close relationship between the two leaders, which is more significant than ever amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Business Insider reported in October that North Korea had sent more than 1,000 containers of ammunition to Russia; He added that the country was on track to become “one of Russia’s most significant foreign arms suppliers.”
A recent report by the Norwegian Intelligence Service said that support from North Korea, as well as China, Belarus and Iran, is helping Russia gain “military advantage” in the war.
«Russia’s position in the war is stronger than a year ago. The country is in the process of seizing the initiative and gaining the military advantage,” the Focus 2024 report said.
“The Kremlin is expected to intensify its war effort in the coming months. “The outlook for actual negotiations is bleak and all signs point to the war continuing throughout 2024.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s alliances in Europe and the United States are faltering due to a lack of approved funds.
A US Army spokesman told BI Monday that it could run out of funds to support Ukraine and its Europe and Africa Command if Congress does not soon approve a new aid package.
“We just saw the Vice President pledge continued US support for Ukraine and NATO,” the spokesperson said, referring to comments made by Kamala Harris at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
«But if there is no money, there is no capacity to back up the words. “Words are great, but actions speak louder than words,” he added.
