Putin can use the peace talks to resupply the army before a new offensive

He expressed concern in an interview with The Telegraph newspaper that the Russian president might pretend to be negotiating when in fact he is training more soldiers and stockpiling more ammunition.

According to him, those who support Ukraine should be “very, very careful” when they approach the issue of peace talks. The minister warned that Putin was behaving “dishonestly”.

“The Telegraph” claims that Cleverley, who attended the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Bucharest this week, doubts that Putin will really negotiate “with good intentions”.

“We have to be very, very careful when ‘peace’ talks – I use the word ‘peace’ in quotation marks – are initiated by Vladimir Putin,” Cleverley said.

According to him, there is a risk that “Putin will simply exploit the ceasefire to train more troops and produce more ammunition and rearm his army.”

“So all that’s going to happen is the exact same scenes again, I don’t know, six, 12, 18 months from now,” Cleverley added.

He said he was wary of the pause Russia is using to make sure its next round of aggression is more effective than the current one.

“And look, Vladimir Putin has experience with this. Georgia, it was supposed to be a one-time event, right? Crimea, it was supposed to be a one-time event, right? Eastern Ukraine, it was supposed to be a one-time event. preparing for the latter to a wave of aggression,” Cleverley said.
