Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin is said to have awakened a sleeping giant during an attack on Ukraine. The giants were European countries, which expressed the opposite attitude to Russia’s action.
European military expert, Nicholas Drummond, said that currently the Blue Continent was expressing its solidarity. This could derail Putin’s plans to succeed in Ukraine.
“Scholz + Germany in partnership with Macron and France, Johnson and Britain, Biden and America, Morawiecki and Poland, and many others, shows more that unites us than separates us,” he said, explaining the maneuvers of European and US leaders. quoted from his Twitter account, Saturday (25/6/2022).
“Such solidarity with Ukraine shows that Russia’s plans to include it are doomed.”
The expert then explained that Putin’s plans for a short war were also now quickly becoming wishful thinking. It is known, the attack has entered its 121st day and Russia is still unable to control the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
“Today, Scholz stating his commitment to Ukraine as long as it requires German support is a clear acknowledgment that Putin will not be allowed to succeed in Ukraine. Putin has awakened a sleeping giant,” he added.
Putin himself declared an attack on Ukraine on February 24. The country’s president, Vladimir Putin, argued that this military action was necessary to protect the country’s Russian-speaking community which he said had been persecuted by Kyiv nationalists.
In addition, he also views that Ukraine’s intention to join the US-led defense alliance, NATO, has also threatened the country’s security. The reason is that NATO is a rival to Moscow and Kyiv can use article 5 of the alliance to attack several areas that have been controlled by Russia since 2014 such as Crimea.
Although smaller in size, Ukraine itself has so far received strong weapon support from European Union countries. Most recently, Germany even sent a self-propelled Howitzer gun to help the country ward off Russia.
Even so, Berlin and other European countries still depend on energy supplies provided by Russia. Currently, Moscow says the supply is said to be being reduced due to pipeline repairs. This then raises new concerns related to the energy crisis.
Meanwhile, in the 121st day of the offensive, Russia and Ukraine are still fighting fiercely in the Severodonetsk region. Even so, so far Moscow has reportedly excelled by controlling the surrounding city.
