Putin apologizes to Israel for Lavrov’s remarks

Russia’s foreign minister’s speculation about Jewish anti-Semitism and Hitler’s Jewish origins caused outrage in Israel. Historians point out that there is no evidence to support Hitler’s Jewish origins.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office reports that Lavrov’s statements were discussed in a telephone conversation between Putin and Bennett.

“The prime minister accepted President Putin’s apology for Lavrov’s remarks and thanked him for explaining his treatment of the Jewish people and Holocaust remembrance,” the statement said.

The Kremlin’s statement on the talks does not mention Putin’s apology. The Kremlin said Putin had reminded Benenet that 40% of the six million Holocaust victims were citizens of the USSR. According to the Kremlin’s statement, Benett emphasized “the Red Army’s crucial contribution to the victory over Nazism.”
