Jakarta –
President of Russia Vladimir Putin announced that ballistic missile intercontinental, Sarmat will be deployed this year.
Reported by the news agency AFP, Thursday (23/2/2023), Sarmat, nicknamed ‘Satan 2’ by Western analysts, is capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads. It is one of Russia’s next-generation missiles that Putin has described as “invincible”.
“We pay special attention, as before, to strengthening the nuclear triad. This year, the missile system’s first launcher Sarmatian will be deployed,” he said in a video released by the Kremlin to mark Russia’s “Defender of the Fatherland” day.
Putin’s speech also came a day before the one-year anniversary of Russia’s military invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
According to a CNN report citing two officials United States of America unnamed, the Sarmat missile appears to have failed its test this week.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the report, saying it was “the prerogative of the Defense Ministry”.
Previously, Putin had said Sarmat missile can hit any target on Earth and will make the Kremlin’s enemies “think twice”.
During his State of the Union address last Tuesday, Putin said Russia would suspend its participation in the New START treaty, the last remaining nuclear arms pact with Washington. The treaty limits the nuclear warheads each country can deploy.
However, Moscow later said it would remain in compliance with the agreement until it expires in early 2026.
US President Joe Biden criticized Putin’s decision to suspend a major nuclear deal with Washington. However, Biden stressed there was no indication Moscow was any closer to actually using nuclear weapons.
“To do that was a huge mistake, it was irresponsible,” Biden told ABC News in an interview in Poland, as reported by AFP news agency, Thursday (23/2/2023).
“But I don’t see that he’s thinking about using nuclear weapons or anything like that,” the US president added.
