On Monday (July 17) local time, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian Ministry of Defense is formulating a countermeasure against the Crimea Bridge incident. In the early hours of Monday morning, a bridge in Crimea was attacked in what Russia said was a terrorist attack carried out by Ukraine.

Putin held a video conference with officials on Monday to order a thorough investigation into the Crimean bridge attack. He said the bombing of the Crimean bridge was a cruel and senseless act because the bridge had not been used for military transport for a long time.

Putin said: “Of course Russia will fight back, and the Ministry of Defense is preparing a plan.”

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Husnulin said in a video conference that the pylons of the Crimea Bridge were not damaged, but a section of the road was completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt. He said one-way traffic would resume by Sept. 15 and two-way traffic by Nov. 1.

Russia’s State Counter-Terrorism Committee blamed Ukraine for the attack on the Crimea bridge, saying it used two naval drones. Ukrainian officials have not publicly claimed responsibility for the incident, but Ukrainian media quoted government sources as saying that the attack on the Crimea bridge was a special operation carried out by the Ukrainian Navy and the State Security Service.

Ukraine admits attack on Crimea bridge last year

This is the second attack on the Crimean bridge in nearly a year. In October last year, a truck exploded on the highway bridge of the Crimea Bridge, causing seven oil tanks on a freight train on the railway bridge parallel to the highway bridge to be ignited, and part of the highway bridge was damaged and collapsed.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Marial posted on social media acknowledging that the country had carried out the attack on the Crimean bridge. “273 days ago we delivered our first strike on the Crimean bridge, disrupting Russian logistics,” she wrote.

The renewed attack on the Crimean bridge coincided with the summer holidays, meaning Russian tourists traveling to and from Crimea had to wait in long queues for car ferries or cross areas currently occupied by Russia.

Ukraine has previously said that Russians have no right to vacation in Ukrainian territory they occupy.

The Crimea region is currently controlled by Russia, but Ukraine does not recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea.
