Puskás, Messi, Neymar… the Olympic champions

O MQJ MEMORY continues in the Olympic spirit. So, in the wake of the Paris Games, it is worth remembering the stars who have won a gold medal on their resumes. The list includes some big names, such as Neymar.

Another example is a Hungarian legend. Ferenc Puskás, a Real Madrid idol, won Olympic gold alongside Jozsef Bozsick, Sandor Kcsis & Co. in 1952. More recently, Neymar entered this Olympus.

Puskás made history wearing the Real Madrid jersey and also shone at the Olympic Games. In 1952, when he was still playing for Budapest Honvéd, he led the way in the Olympic final with the then Yugoslavia: Hungary won 2-0.

One of the best goalkeepers in history, Lev Yashin is also in this Olympic pantheon. He helped the then Soviet Union win gold in 1956, a 1-0 victory over Yugoslavia in the final.

Spain won Olympic gold on home soil in 1992. The duo Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique took the top spot on the podium.

Nigeria made history in 1996 – they beat Brazil in the semi-finals and beat Argentina in the final. That generation had Okocha and Kanu as standouts.

Eto’o led Cameroon to victory in 2000. The striker even scored in the final against Spain: a 2-2 draw in normal time and then victory on penalties.

In 2004, Tévez, who later became known in Brazilian football, scored the winning goal for Argentina against Paraguay: 1-0.

Argentina became two-time Olympic champions in 2008 with a squad full of stars, including Messi. Di María, Riquelme and Agüero also helped in the victory.

After some disappointments, the Brazil finally won gold in 2016, on home soil. Neymar thus entered Brazilian history. He led the team in the tournament.
