Purple Spaces and Lower Prices: The Latest Updates on Strasbourg’s Parking Policy

On June 8, 2023, the City of Strasbourg announced in a press release several changes to its parking policy, implemented since last April. Price reductions in certain areas, “purple” places and new experiments, we take stock.

For two months, this is the subject that is on everyone’s lips. The parking reform decided by the municipality last March and entered into force since April 3, continues to be debated. Especially in the municipal arena where the subject has already come up twice.

You have to believe that never two without three applies again, since the next city council will once again return the subject to the table. This time, following the implementation of additional measures by the Strasbourg executive on its parking reform.

A change of zone for Avenue des Vosges and Neudorf

Some of these steps are taken to put water in the wine, or in this case, diesel in the cargo bike. This is the case of a change of zone for the avenue des Vosges, but also for the Neudorfwhere parking will become chargeable in 2024.

In the first case, the south of the avenue will go into the orange zone, against the current red zone. More concretely, this means that 2 hours of parking will cost €3.50, compared to €8 in the red zone. Be careful though: from 2h30 of parking in the orange zone, we will still be at 8 €.

For the Neudorf, its transition to paid parking in the first quarter of 2024 should have been done with a large part in the green zone, and the north of the district, the entire Rivetoile part in particular, in the orange zone. The municipality has finally decided to simplify the whole: all of Neudorf will now be in the green zone. As a reminder, this means that 2 hours of parking will cost €2.

Experimenting with “purple” squares

Second announcement: the experimentation of 200 “purple” places. Concretely, these are short-term parking spaces, with only 1h30 authorized. They will be located near shops and services, in an extended city center going from the Grande-Île to the Krutenau, passing by the station, the Bourse sector and the avenue des Vosges.

The experimentation will begin from the summer, and will extend to the Christmas market. Price level, 1h will cost 1€, i.e. the price of a green zone. Last subtlety: road subscribers will not be able to park on this device, ensuring places for visitors.

An expanded professional package

Finally, the City also announced the extension of the professional package to other economic activities. This package, which allows professions to benefit from a parking price of €11 per daywill henceforth benefit home hairdressing activities or the collection of specific waste. As for free parking, it will now include midwives.

The City also explains that it proposed the establishment of a working group with representatives of the economic world, in order to arrive at a new professional package. Parking and its problems have not finished making people talk…
