February 4 is World Cancer Day, and on the occasion of that day all kinds of actions take place. On the day itself, famous buildings and streets around the world are lit up in purple, such as the Grote Marktstraat in The Hague and the Sint-Bavokerk in Haarlem. In addition, this year for the fifth time in a row they will wear a purple ribbon from the World Cancer Research Fund (WKOF). In this way they draw attention to the impact of cancer.
Impact
Since 2017, this ribbon with the message ‘Cancer is not something you carry alone’ has become a symbol that moves thousands of people to give a face to the impact of cancer. In the run-up to World Cancer Day, people from all over the Netherlands share their experience with cancer as a patient, former patient or loved one. These stories show that the attention for cancer should never diminish, not even in times of corona.
