Purmerender receives a substantial prison sentence for causing a fatal accident on A7 Inland

Another motorist was killed. Van der M. is also not allowed to drive a car for three years. The 33-year-old was also convicted for leaving the accident scene immediately after the collision. Later that night, he turned himself in to the police. He said he can hardly remember anything about the accident during the handling of his case.

The sentence imposed on Van der M. is lower than the twelve months in prison, two of which were conditionally demanded by the public prosecutor. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) has assumed that Van der M. was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. But the Purmerender himself has denied this. He says after the accident at a friend’s house to have had a drink and to have used a line of cocaine to recover from the shock. The court found that it was insufficiently established that this statement by the suspect was incorrect.

The Haarlem court does, however, strongly blame the Purmerend motorist that he exceeded the speed limit by no less than sixty kilometers per hour and left after the accident, leaving the victim helpless in his car. After the accident, Van der M. was collected by his partner, washed his clothes and left for a friend’s shed. According to his own words, he had flashbacks about the accident, which prompted him to report to the police.
