The book Puree by Jan Vantoortelboom has won the Boekenbon Literature Prize 2023. This was announced by jury chairman Ingrid van Engelshoven on Thursday evening in the Grote of Sint-Jacobskerk in The Hague. The Flemish writer and columnist receives the prize of 50,000 euros.
“Mash does not contain too many words and yet you are captivated by the richness of the language,” said Van Engelshoven at the award ceremony.
Puree is further described in the jury report as a “stunning literary portrait of a traumatized seventy-year-old who is haunted by his childhood memories”.
“Vantoortelboom effortlessly puts tension on the boundary between fiction and reality, without losing sight of the psychological depth of his characters and the progression of the story,” was the jury’s further assessment of the book.
The other contenders for the prize were Saskia de Coster Not reallyTiemen Hiemstra with W, Roxane van Iperen with I promise and Richard Osinga with Munt.
The Boekenbon Literature Prize is the recognition of the best Dutch literary book of the year. In 2022, the Bookbon Literature Prize went to the book The song of stork and dromedary by Anjet Daanje.
