The storm “Daniel” is ravaging the Greek holiday paradise of Skiathos. A Norwegian cohabiting couple ended up in the middle of the “storm’s center”.

– It is absolutely terrible. It’s been complete Ragnarok here for the past 24 hours.

Sissel Marie Maurelius (65) sits weatherproof in the hotel room in Skiathos in Greece with her partner Tom Rønne (57).

They are dry-shod on the third floor, while the rest of Hotel Diamanta has been evacuated. The reception on the first floor is completely flooded, she says.

– We have no water or food, and the electricity has been switched off. There is mud everywhere.

Extreme weather “Daniel” is ravaging southwestern parts of Greece, including parts of Bulgaria and Turkey.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday that they were facing a “total extreme weather phenomenon” and urged the population to follow the authorities’ advice.

The precipitation has been most extremely central in Greece and on the Sporades archipelago, where the cohabitants from Tromsø are located.

The enormous amounts of rainfall lead to extreme flooding, which has put all infrastructure out of action.

The extreme weather has so far claimed at least seven lives, including two tourists who were swept away by a strong current at a campsite in northwest Turkey, according to Ap.

Weather authorities in Greece recorded 75.4 centimeters of rain in a village in the region of Pillion, the highest level recorded since 2006.

The worst is not over yet, but according to the Greek climate minister Vassilis Kikilias, it is expected that it may start to dry up on Wednesday morning.

The unusually heavy rain comes on the eve of a summer in which forest fires have ravaged Greece. At the end of August, 18 people, who were probably migrants, were found dead in a fire-ravaged area in the north-east of the country.

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says the extreme weather is due to climate change.

– I fear the carefree summers as we knew them are over from now on, and that the summers we get in the future will be more difficult.

SWIMMING CLOSED: This is what it looks like in the pool area at the hotel of Sissel Marie Marelius and Tom Rønne Photo: Private

Norwegian Maurelius has been to Crete more than 60 times, she says, but this time she and her boyfriend decided to try something new and went to Skiathos.

– Locals I have spoken to here say it is the worst storm in 60 years.

– There is a curfew and all shops are closed. In several places, roads are broken, and we see motorbikes drowning in water. It’s chaos.

Maurelius says she has been in contact with the travel company Apollo. They do what they can, but have not been able to do much for the cohabiting couple as there is a curfew and everything is closed.

When VG talks to Maurelius late on Tuesday evening, she says that she hasn’t eaten since breakfast.

– Tomorrow I will try to see if I can find any food, she says and says that the rain has stopped, and that it may look as if the water level is dropping.

– I survive on peanuts, so I can make it until tomorrow, she concludes optimistically.
