Purchasing power: Goodyear employees

The employees of the Goodyear-Dunlop factories in Riom in the Puy-de-Dôme and Montluçon in the Allier have been on an indefinite strike since July 7 to demand wage increases in order to preserve their purchasing power. Disappointed by the granting of a bonus of 16 euros, they decided to offer it to a Montluçonnaise association which supports hospitalized children.

The manufacture of tires at the Goodyear-Dunlop plant in Montluçon in the Allier department and the retreading activity at that of Riom in the Puy-de-Dôme have been greatly slowed down by a strike movement which began on 7 July. “It continues because it is an unlimited movement, everyone does as they see fit, some 2 hours a day, others eight” explains David Guillaume, general secretary of the CGT union (majority on the Montluçon site). “Overall it is very well followed, 80% in the workshops” Allier, where 550 people work on permanent contracts, specifying that the production of tires, mainly for motorcycles, is halved.

While discussions with management raised hopes last May for a profit-sharing bonus of €400, the announcement of a payment reduced to €16 in June was “the spark, it provoked anger and indignation. In return, we asked for the reinstatement of this participation bonus of 400 euros, because 16 euros is worse than nothing. says David Guillaume.

Pending the resumption of negotiations with management, the employees have decided to pay the money from this bonus to the Montluçonnaise association. Ear of Light who accompanies hospitalized children. Already 4,000 euros have been raised.

In Riom, a site specializing in the retreading of truck tires, “75 tires came out last Friday against 400 usual” Didier Raynaud, CFDT delegate (majority) and central union delegate, told AFP. “We are asking for emergency measures, all the more legitimate in view of the profits made by the company”added the elected staff of this factory which employs, according to its figures, 92 people.

« The management of Goodyear France confirms its desire to continue the dialogue with the staff representatives. A meeting will be held next week to anticipate the mandatory annual salary negotiations of 2023 “Said the company, requested by AFP.

The unions are therefore waiting for this meeting, which should be held on July 21. “But this is only about the Binding Annual Negotiations of 2023; they advance them by 6 months, but if the application is not done until next year, it will be too late” comments David Guillaume.

Goodyear posted $17.5 billion in revenue in 2021, with net profit of $764 million, according to its latest annual report. In the first quarter of 2022, its sales reached 4.9 billion USD, a figure up 40% year-on-year.
