Puppet Theater and Shadow Imagination: Fostering National Identity in Children through Entertainment and Education at Liwa Dates Festival

Puppet theater and shadow imagination provides an entertaining and educational platform for children at the Liwa Dates Festival, by presenting many stories derived from heritage, with the aim of implanting the values of national identity in the hearts of children, and strengthening their Emirati advantage.

Director Saeed Al Zaabi of the organizing committee of the festival said that the plays were implemented with Emirati efforts, and preparations were made for this work before the festival to present it in a way that would be close to and attractive to children.

For her part, Nada Al-Hamli, one of the festival’s visitors, said that the puppet theater is able, in light of the technological development, to reach the audience, and it is difficult for the puppet’s ability to deliver the message to change, no matter how advanced the technology is. She explained that simplicity is always the main driver for all performances, and on the contrary, today’s generation needs a doll to draw children’s attention away from their tablets for a bit, introduce them to the world of colors and useful stories, and encourage them to communicate with the real world instead of the virtual one.
