Pupils also study at home at home Press release

April 20, 2021.

The information was prepared by Līga Ribkinska, Communications Director of AS Repharm.

The answers of the surveyed Latvians show that 81% of Latvian students have a well-equipped place with a desk for distance learning, 9% study at the family dining table, while other children in a survey conducted by the research agency Norstat during the pandemic.

The survey data show that the number of children in the family, as well as the income level per person and the household as a whole are considered to be the determining factor in improving the place of study – families with higher incomes and several children have more often set up a special place for students.

The majority or 74% of respondents who have a separate place to study with a desk in their place of residence have three children of school age in their family. In contrast, in families with one school-age child – 60% have their own desk. Families with four children most often study at a common desk, but in families with one or two children, they rarely study at a common desk – 6% of cases. Places such as a sofa and a bed are most often or 6% of the time studied in families with two children.

Of the respondents with a high income level (over 1,500 euros per month), children each study at their desk in 41% of cases, but for persons with a lower income, children each study at their desk only in 17% of cases. Thus, it can be concluded that the level of income also plays a role in the arrangement of a study place, on which the living space and improvement possibilities most often depend.

“For learning at home to be as effective as in school, the environment in which it takes place must be well-designed. Therefore, parental support is needed for both junior and adolescent students. Ergonomic furniture has a significant effect on student well-being and, of course, posture.” Guna Vītoliņa, an expert of “Mēness aptieka”, doctor of physical medicine and rehabilitation of the Association of Health Centers, evaluates the situation when children have had to study a lot outside school for a long time.

Specialist advice for a thoughtful and ergonomic learning environment for students:

• A separate room should be provided for the child (adolescent) whenever possible.

• It is important to have a suitable desk and a comfortable chair, as well as the right natural light and a sufficiently bright table lamp.

• The training area should be arranged so that the legs rest on the floor, the back is not bent and the arms can be bent at the elbows at a 45 degree angle.

• Make sure that the child does not put his feet under the bottom while sitting – this will cause a sloping back and incorrect posture.

• Work and rest regime should be followed to prevent prolonged sitting.

1001 Latvian residents aged 18 to 74 participated in the population survey conducted by Norstat.
