Punishments for threatening French teenager who criticized Islam

Mila was 16 when it all started in 2020. In a live stream on Instagram, she rejected the advances of a young Muslim. “No chance,” she said, if only because she’s a lesbian. Then she posted a video in which she was very vocal against Islam. She said she abhorred all religions, calling Islam a ‘religion of hatred’.

Permanent Police Surveillance

She was faced with threats. She could no longer go to school and was given permanent police surveillance. It sparked a fierce debate in France about freedom of expression and also a criminal case.

The French judiciary was able to identify and charge thirteen internet threats from Mila. Eleven of them have now been found guilty. “Social media is the street,” the judge said. “What you don’t do on the street, you shouldn’t do on social media.”

One suspect goes free because his message (‘blowing up’) was not about Mila personally, but about her account. Another suspect goes free after an error in the trial.

‘dirty lesbian’

According to her lawyer, Mila received about 100,000 threats, including rape and death. She was also called a ‘dirty lesbian’. During the case, Mila stated that she feels “sentenced to death.”

She reiterated during the trial that she hates ‘all religions, not just Islam’.
