Pumas defeated Mazatlán on Matchday 14 with an own goal, a debut by Rogelio Funes Mori and great goals by ‘Chino’ Huerta and Leo Suárez to break a streak of five games without knowing victory in the Clausura 2024 of Liga MX.
Mazatlán started the game in the worst way, because in less than a minute its goalkeeper Hugo González and full-back José Madueña made a mistake in a routine play after a misguided cross by Rodrigo López.
González came out to save and clear the ball with one hand, but ended up crashing it into the legs of César ‘Chino’ Huerta. The winger Madueña tried to clear, but managed to lightly contact the ball, causing it to reach the back of the net for the 0-1 score in less than a minute.
Mazatlán’s own goal broke Pumas’ streak of 223 minutes without scoring, that is, since two games ago.
The opportunity for Mazatlán to tie was on the right leg of Luis Amarilla at 13 minutes. The forward created space from three quarters of the field and outlined himself towards his right side when he reached the edge of the Pumas area, where he took a powerful and crossed shot that caressed Julio González’s far post.
Pumas did not show any major danger after Mazatlán’s ‘gift’ one minute into the game. The locals insisted, but fortune did not smile on them, since Amarilla would try again, but headlong, and shortly after Gustavo del Prete, a former university student.
Before the break, Luis Amarilla forgave for the third time when he was cleared inside the area, but when finishing he failed to cross his leg, as he ended up hitting the net on one side despite having an advantage in front of the goal.
For the second half, Pumas made two changes: Rogelio Funes Mori and Adrián Aldrete for Memo Martínez and Pablo Monroy. However, it was Mazatlán who came closest to scoring, again, in the 54th minute when Del Prete was alone at the second post, with time and without marking, but he made a regrettable header from the side and was too sharp.
The Pumas change took effect in the 66th minute with the play of ‘Chino’ Huerta, who gave the ball to Funes Mori on the edge of the area and he shot in two halves with the fortune of the deflection of the Mazatlán center to score the 0- 2 and his first goal with the university students.
Near the end, Julio González extinguished what could have been Mazatlán’s rebirth when in the 80th he saved a poisoned low shot from Amarilla at the near post that promised to add drama to the match.
When it seemed that Pumas was leaving with two goals, ‘Chino’ Huerta joined the party in the 87th minute with a play very much in his style in which he put in a ‘cannon’ and shot left footed without much angle to sneak the ball into the goal. the fork, score his goal and seal the 0-3 win.
Leo Suárez was not left wanting and a minute after entering the field he added his name to the board with a superb finish from midfield to stop Hugo González and complete the 0-4 win.
