Pulpally: After the suicide of a farmer and the arrest of a Congress leader, shocking stories of loan fraud are coming out of the Pulpally Cooperative Bank. Many families, including Kelakavala Parambakkat Daniel’s, were cheated.
Daniel’s family took a loan of Rs 2 lakh from Pulpally Bank to pay off small debts and now they have to repay more than Rs 1 crore. In 2018, a loan of Rs 2 lakh was taken at 33 cents in Daniel’s Anapara and 28 cents in Kelakavala in the name of his wife Sarakutty.
All the papers were fixed by Sajeev, who has good relations with the family. Daniel’s sons, Shiju and Shibu, worked with Sajeev. Shiju was a mason at Inchipadu in Karnataka. Sajeev’s offer was a salary of Rs 10,000 per month, expenses and a share in the profits of ginger cultivation. According to Sajjevan, the family was forced to take more loans for the stake. Sajeev himself made the arrangements for that.
Apart from signing all the documents shown by Sajeev, he did not inquire about the amount of the loan or go directly to the bank to collect the money. Daniel and Sarakutty were shocked when they received a notice from the bank. A joint loan of Rs 36 lakh was granted including Rs 16 lakh to Daniel and Rs 20 lakh to Sarakutty. Later it came to know that the money was transferred to the accounts mentioned by Sajjevan.
Sajeev’s reply was that whenever the notice came, he would pay. When there was no action, the President went to KK Abraham’s house and informed him. He also asked Sajeev to settle the loan and submit the document immediately. Later Panchayat President T.S. Dilip Kumar, I.C. Balakrishnan MLA and Bishop of Meenangadi also intervened in the issue. Sajeev and his brother Shaji agreed many times that they would settle the liability and give the document.
In the meantime, his son Shiju quit farming in Karnataka. Sajeev did not get what he promised. Daniel and his family live in a house named after his daughter Sheba. It is also decaying due to age. Both of them went on strike for 7 months and 2 days.
Rajendran Nair, Kallikal Saji, Gopalan and others who committed suicide the other day were with the strike. Daniel also says that Sajeev has taken a loan of 25 lakh rupees in the name of his son Shiju by giving someone’s power of attorney. The notice came last day. Thus, 70-year-old Daniel and 65-year-old Sarakutty are saddened to leave their bed.
