Griffith University epidemiologist, Dicky Budiman confirmed that a person has recovered from Covid-19 because infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus can return to being infected with SARS-CoV-2.
According to Dicky, this was because the antibodies of someone who recovered from Covid-19 did not last forever.
“In previous studies, it was found that people who recovered from Covid-19 were anti-inflammatory or had immunity that lasted two to three months. After that, their immunity decreases or is lost. So this means theoretically he can be infected again by Covid-19, “said Dicky CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (26/8).
Dicky said the results of a recent study published by the University of Hong Kong that a 33-year-old man who was infected with the coronavirus for the second time also confirmed the results of previous studies. He said previous research on recovered people could be reinfected with Covid-19.
In research conducted by the University of Hong Kong, he also mentioned that the viral genome of reinfected people is different from the genome of the previous virus. Thus, providing evidence that immunity does not last long.
“However, this is not something to be worried about. Staying alert is important, but panicking isn’t. Why should you be alert? This proves that behavior change must be carried out by both the general public and those who have been infected, “he said. the word.
Furthermore, Dicky said that a person’s recovery from Covid-19 is an exciting thing. However, he warned, immunity from Covid-19 was the same as immunity against other corona viruses, which did not last long.
“That’s why there needs to be an effective vaccine and a definite cure for Covid-19,” said Dicky.
On the other hand, Dicky also said that interventions in the form of testing, tracking, isolation and behavior change are mandatory. If left unchecked, according to him, it will lead to new cases, especially for vulnerable people.
“The relatively encouraging news from the Hong Kong study is that this second infection was asymptomatic, asymptomatic. In this case, although the previous antibodies did not completely protect against infection, at least they showed a protective effect, where the symptoms displayed were not severe, “he said.
Dicky added, further research is needed regarding the second Covid-19 infection. Because, he said, previous research indicated that people who recovered from Covid-19 had lung problems.
