The researchers’ analysis contains data on the deployment of Russian troops as of December 17. Its authors assert about “new activity” near Kursk, Bryansk, Valuikov and Kletnya.

Russia continues to accumulate troops near the Ukrainian border. This is evidenced by data on social media and satellite data, according to a study by DFRLab. published on the Medium portal.

Researchers have traced the recent movement of Russian units from the St. Petersburg area to Kursk, about 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Also, thanks to a video from open sources, DFRLab found out that trains with the equipment of the 138th and 25th motorized rifle brigades of the 6th Army from St. Petersburg were moving to the Otreshkovo station, located five kilometers from this training ground.

The authors say that new activity as of December 17 is observed near Kursk, Bryansk, Valuyek and Kletnya.

“Given the large amount of equipment that accumulates near the border with Ukraine, and the relatively small size of the known camps, the dominant theory is that there are several other undetected small camps, such as the one seen in Kursk, scattered across the Kursk and Bryansk regions.” – the authors write.

The movement of a military convoy with T-72 tanks and other military vehicles through Kletnya was recorded thanks to a video on the TikTok social network, which appeared on December 13. DFRLab concluded that the convoy was moving towards the border with Belarus.

“While open source footage and satellite imagery can reveal valuable details about the Russian army build-up, it also raises new questions that still have to be answered,” the researchers said.

They stressed that there are gaps in monitoring the movement of the military, as evidenced by observations in the Bryansk region, where armored trains were seen moving to Klintsy, after which they could not be found.

“Such incidental testimony suggests the likelihood that Russia is moving more equipment than it is deploying, but this should not distract from the fact that there is concrete documentary evidence of significant accumulation near Ukraine,” the study concluded.

CNN, citing American intelligence, also writes that Russian authorities continue to build up troops near the border with Ukraine.
