Pujata: As the coldest seasons approach, the pressure of illegal immigration should decrease

This week, Pujāts is participating in a meeting of Baltic law enforcement officials in Lithuania in connection with the situation at the EU’s external border.

Currently, the situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border remains tense, although traditionally the approach of the autumn and winter months has reduced illegal immigration. “The situation for us now is similar to that on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. Classically, the cold has reduced the pressure of illegal immigration, but what the future situation will be, time will tell,” said Pujāts.

The Latvian Border Guard informs the public every day about the specific number of persons who are prohibited from crossing the Latvian-Belarusian state border. Pujat confirmed that the border guard has repeatedly returned several groups of illegal immigrants to Belarus. “These numbers are not growing at the moment, and in general our tactics are showing some success, because with our signal we have indicated that it will not be easy for illegal business to inject illegal immigrants,” Pujāts said.

He confirmed that the activity of illegal immigration workers had also been established on the Latvian side. “Currently, we have two Estonian nationals in custody, as well as two Iraqi citizens with Swedish residence permits who had come to Latvia. During the preventive measures, they failed to meet and deport illegal immigrants, so there was no reason to detain them. In any case, illegal immigrants waiters, but we are monitoring the situation, “stressed Pujāts.

The videos released in Lithuania this week show how the Belarusian authorities are forcibly trying to get immigrants into Lithuania. Pujāts pointed out that on the Latvian side it was also observed that the employees of the Belarusian authorities bring immigrants to the border, but no open violence has been detected.

At a meeting in Lithuania this week, the Baltic law enforcement officers are considering the issue of concluding cross-border co-operation agreements to ensure rapid response and management of the situation in emergency situations.

Explaining the above, Pujāts indicated that he would initiate amendments to regulatory enactments in order to provide the Chief of the Border Guard with the authority to sign an agreement with the authorities of Latvia’s neighboring countries on faster operational co-operation. This means that in the event of a crisis in one of the neighboring countries, it will be possible to send law enforcement officers to help faster and easier.

It has already been reported that the government, taking into account the number of detected cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian border and its rapid increase, previously decided to declare a state of emergency from August 11 to November 10 in Ludza, Kraslava, Augšdaugava counties, as well as Daugavpils.

Representatives of the government coalition have pointed out that the efforts of the Alexander Lukashenko regime in power in Belarus to force the population of third countries in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland can be assessed as manifestations of a hybrid war or a hybrid threat.
