NOS news•
Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont is back in Belgium. This was reported by his party Junts per Catalunya. Puigdemont turned up yesterday in Barcelona, returning after seven years in exile, and gave a short speech. He then fled in a waiting car.
The police in Catalonia were then working on a man manhunt to find it again. Roads were closed and several police investigations took place. However, he was still missing. Catalan activist Lluís Llach made a statement on social media, saying that under Puigdemont’s own authority, he was “safe”. It was not yet clear at the time whether that was true.
Puigdemont is wanted on a high court order in Spain, where he is suspected of being a suspect along with other independence leaders. There is an amnesty law in Spain, which allows Catalan separatists who participated in the 2017 independence referendum to receive amnesty. Due to the embalming allegations, this does not apply to Puigdemont, who has lived in Belgium for years.
