Carles Puigdemont moved to live in Northern Catalonia -the southern area of France with historical and linguistic ties with Catalonia– to develop the Catalan election campaign from there and prepare for his planned return for the investiture debate.
This was explained by sources from the independence party. JxCatwho stated that Puigdemont is already emptying his house in Waterloo (Belgium), where he settled in 2018, after fleeing Spain, and moved to a new temporary home in the Vallespir region, in the south of France, less than an hour’s drive from his home in Girona.
The independence leader fled Spain on October 30, 2017, three days after the failed declaration of independence of Catalonia, in the face of an imminent complaint from the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office for rebellion, sedition and embezzlement.
Six and a half years later, Puigdemont’s plans now involve returning to Catalonia permanently, not for the electoral campaign, but for the investiture debate, scheduled for June 25 at the latest.
Amnesty
A return for which he estimates that the amnesty law will already be in force, although he has already hinted that, although there is a risk of arrest if the national arrest order has not been withdrawn, he will still return to Catalonia to attend the investment.
It was around Easter when he moved to live in Vallespir, the French border region that limits to the south with the province of Girona and is located within the Pyrenees Department Orientalin the Occitania Region.
From here, Puigdemont is preparing his activities for the Catalan elections on May 12 and precisely this Saturday, in the French town of Elna, he will star in the presentation of the candidacies of Together + Puigdemont for Catalonia.
Candidates that were unanimously approved by the JxCat executive and that tomorrow will be ratified by the party’s national council.
Puigdemont, who heads the list for Barcelona, will be accompanied by the businesswoman Anna Navarro Schlegel as number two and by the former minister Joseph Rull in third place, followed by the president of the Parliament, Anna Erraand the until now president of the JxCat group in the Catalan chamber, Albert Batet.
Although he already lives in Vallespir, Puigdemont will still have to return to Belgiumsince in the coming weeks there will continue to be activity in the European Parliament, where he is an MEP.
JxCat is planning an electoral campaign completely focused on the figure of Puigdemont, to the point that it plans to organize part of its media events in the south of France, a different model from the events of 2017 and 2021, when rallies were held throughout Catalonia with live telematic connections with the former president from Belgium.
