Puerto Rican Eddie Morán assumes mayor of the city of Reading, Pennsylvania

Washington – Puerto Rican Eddie Morán swore today as Mayor of Reading, Pennsylvania, in a ceremony he has promoted as a celebration of the Three Wise Men Day.

Morán, a native of Hatillo, is the first Hispanic mayor of Reading.

On Sunday, on the eve of his oath, Morán promoted an event in which toys were distributed to boys and girls.

“For me it is very emotional,” said Morán, who according to WFMZ, saw the celebration of the Three Wise Men as an opportunity to remember the things they had at home.

Morán has indicated that the economic development of the city is his most important agenda.

Morán’s oath took place this morning at the Santander de Reading fine arts center.

About one third of the city’s nearly 90,000 residents are of Puerto Rican origin. 64% are Hispanic.

The Puerto Rican politician – affiliated with the Democrats – defeated Republican Lou Perugini decisively last November, in a 4 to 1 ratio. The election night Morán obtained 6,548 votes against 1,555 of Perugini.

From the age of 13, Morán lived in Brooklyn.

Reading arrived in 2008 convinced that to achieve the dream of having his own home and giving his family a more comfortable life, he needed to leave behind the high cost of living in New York.

With a budget of $ 93 million, Morán said he will use his six-year experience at the Reading School Board for the benefit of the entire city. But, he stressed that the main focus has to be on economic issues. “Our economic development has to improve,” he told El Nuevo Día, in an interview last November.

By law, the mayor of Reading swears in his position on the first Monday of January, after the municipal elections. This year, the swearing coincides with the Day of the Three Wise Men, which Morán has considered a blessing.
