Puck Pieterse easily won the World Cup competition in Hulst, Zeeland, on Saturday. The Fenix-Deceuninck rider held out against Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado in the final phase. World champion Fem van Empel finished fourth, partly due to a fall.
The 21-year-old Pieterse immediately took the lead at the start. Van Empel, Lucinda Brand and World Cup leader Alvarado gave chase, but saw the gap continue to widen.
Van Empel crashed halfway through the race, partly because Brand cut her off. The 21-year-old world champion fell just short of catching up with number three. Alvarado almost overtook Pieterse in the final phase, but could not keep her compatriot from winning.
It is the second time this season that Pieterse beats Van Empel. The Amersfoort player put an end to Van Empel’s impressive series of eleven victories on Tuesday in Gavere, Belgium. She also won in Diegem, Belgium, on Thursday.
Pieterse was also the strongest in Hulst last year. The World Cup competition in Zeeland was the eleventh in the cycle and the first on Dutch soil.
