Literature A fake Twitter account that pretended to be publisher Xander Uitgevers, but which has since been removed, reported the death of the Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb (54) on Monday. But the publisher itself contradicts that the writer has died and confirms that it is fake news.
The ‘news’ that the writer would have died was launched on Monday afternoon via the account @XanderNewsNL, which at the time had only retweeted one tweet, namely one of the official account @XanderUitgevers. The false account no longer exists.
The spokeswoman for the Dutch publisher of Nothomb says that the fake account was probably taken offline by the person behind it. “We will find out where this message comes from,” the publisher tells us in a response. “It probably came from a fake account. We are not aware of her death and have not disseminated this information. There has since been contact, we can confirm that Amélie Nothomb is perfectly healthy. We are inundated with questions and have therefore not yet been able to take action. ” The office says to be in the dark about who is behind the account. In any case, that would make action more difficult. Last week, similar rumors are said to have “buzzed” in France.
