Publicis Health has reached a settlement of 350 million dollars (322 million euros) with all American states. The advertising company is said to have promoted highly addictive painkillers for years and thus played a role in the opiate crisis in the US.
For example, Publicis collaborated with the American pharmaceutical company Purdue from 2010 to 2019. That company produces the painkiller OxyContin with oxycodone. This active substance shows similarities with heroin.
The pharmaceutical company was accused of promoting the painkiller through aggressive marketing practices and concealing the risks associated with addiction and overdoses.
Publicis helped Purdue with a marketing strategy to persuade doctors to prescribe OxyContin, according to the New York attorney general. This had to be done in higher doses and for longer periods.
According to the prosecutor, the strategy resulted in the painkiller being prescribed more often. This led to more addicts and overdose deaths. Over the past twenty years, this opioid crisis is said to have claimed more than 500,000 lives.
Several cases are pending in the United States against pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies and drug distributors. The companies are accused of downplaying the addiction risks of painkillers. They are also said to not sufficiently monitor the safety of patients.
