Local public transport is considered the “backbone of the mobility transition”. With a share of 21 percent of inner-city traffic, local public transport is an important mode of transport in Düsseldorf. Every day, several hundred thousand people travel by bus and train in the city and the region.
A well-developed local transport network relieves the pressure on Düsseldorf’s heavily frequented streets and thus improves the quality of other transport routes. Within equal mobility, public transport therefore plays a key role both for inner-city routes and for commercial and commuter traffic that connect the business, shopping and leisure location with the region.
In the future, the main aim will be to motivate the population to switch from their own cars to climate-friendly environmentally friendly transport (bus, train, cycling and walking) with a well-coordinated offer. In order to achieve this goal and to further increase the share of public transport in urban transport performance, the existing transport infrastructure must be expanded, including better vehicle and stop quality. On the main routes in particular, it is about improving the quality of service and speeding up buses and trains. In addition, an attractive and safe street space must be ensured in the vicinity of the stops.
In order to convince even more people to use buses and trains in the future, issues such as punctuality, reliability, fare structures, customer services and passenger information are also of crucial importance. The interfaces between the modes of transport must also be optimized in terms of the use of different modes of transport (multimodality). Together with its mobility partner Rheinbahn, the state capital of Düsseldorf will further develop public transport in all of these aspects as part of Mobility Plan D.
