Due to concerns about the further spread of the novel corona virus, public schools in the metropolis of New York will remain closed from today. “I am very, very concerned that we will see this disease spread rapidly and it is time to take more drastic measures,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference yesterday.
“It is a decision that I made without joy and with a lot of pain.” The schools should not reopen until April 20 at the earliest, but possibly not at all during this school year.
Previously, schools in the New York area had already closed in a few cases, and schools across the country are already closed in some entire states such as Ohio. With around 1.1 million children and young people, the metropolis of New York has by far the largest public school system in the country.
