It has been a week since Kosuke Omoto, a 36-year-old public school teacher, was arrested for murdering a male resident in a house in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, on the 17th. The man’s house was along the suspect’s commuting route, but no evidence of stolen money or any trouble between the two has been found. Why was the man’s house targeted? ◆ Arrested teacher remains silent
“I can’t quite see what kind of connection the two had.” A senior police officer said: The suspect has remained silent after denying the charges against the investigation after his arrest. There appears to be no statement suggesting a motive.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on February 24. Omoto was arrested on the 10th of this month for slashing the face and neck of a resident contract employee, Masafumi Yamagishi, who was 63 at the time, at a house in Ichinoe, Edogawa Ward.
Omoto was appointed as a special-needs class teacher at a ward school in April last year. It is about 150 meters from junior high school to Mr. Yamagishi. Omoto, who lived in Oshima, Koto Ward, got off at Ichinoe Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line and walked to junior high school. Mr. Yamagishi is on the way.
◆ “I entered the house wearing my shoes because I was told it was okay.”
This commuting route is a possibility that the two had contact for about 11 months before the incident.
According to investigative sources, Omoto explained that he contacted Yamagishi during a voluntary questioning before his arrest “in January this year, on the way from school to the station.” There was no trouble, and he said, “A man (Mr. Yamagishi) asked me to help him carry his luggage, so I went into the house.” He reportedly said in February that he had been invited into his home.
Was it a relationship that just happened to meet and help? However, according to investigative sources, Yamagishi found footprints of the same type as Omoto’s sneakers, as well as a bloody mask and glasses believed to belong to Omoto. A memorandum that seems to be a hypothetical question and answer in anticipation of an interview has also been seized by the relevant parties.
During the voluntary questioning, Omoto said, “I was told to wear my shoes, so I entered the house wearing my shoes.” However, an investigative executive says, “It’s too unnatural.”
Suspect Omoto is said to have lost several million yen in horse racing while having a mortgage loan, and also made investment failures. It is possible that the burglary was intended for theft, but another senior investigative official said, “There are many houses in the surrounding area that look wealthy. If it was for theft, I don’t know why they targeted Mr. Yamagishi.”
◆Student: “I still can’t calm down.”
A week has passed since Suspect Omoto was absent from school. According to the Edogawa Ward Board of Education, immediately after the incident, several students in special-needs classes voiced their concerns, and clinical psychologists continue to provide care to the students every day. A board of education official said, “We have never experienced a case of this magnitude. We will continue to provide the necessary support.”
A 2nd year female student (13) on her way home from school muttered. “She was a kind teacher, so even now I can’t fill the gap with the incident. I still can’t calm down.”
