Public Prosecution Service in appeal against decision in murder case Derk Wiersum | Inland

VideoThe Public Prosecution Service (OM) is appealing the decision in the case of the murder of lawyer Derk Wiersum. Last week, the court had sentenced two men to 30 years in prison for having been found guilty of complicity in murder. The Public Prosecution Service had demanded life in July.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, an appeal is important because it is verdict deviates of the life sentence. “With this requirement, the Public Prosecution Service wanted to send out a strong and crystal-clear signal,” said a statement. A life sentence is – according to the Public Prosecution Service – ‘an appropriate punishment’ for Giermo B. and Moreno B., who ‘knew that the victim was a lawyer and were solely guided by financial gain’.

In addition, the Public Prosecution Service considers an appeal important because of the ‘social impact of this murder’. In addition, the Public Prosecution Service outlines a worrying climate ‘in which we see an increase in rental and misdemeanor murders, also of persons who serve the rule of law, with little respect for human life’.

‘Too easy’

Gërmo B. and Moreno B. are also entering appealthey announced last week. Both men maintained throughout the trial that they had nothing to do with the murder. Lawyer Gerald Roethof, who assists Moreno B., said after the verdict that the judge had reached a conviction too easily in his opinion.

Until the moment he was shot, Derk Wiersum was the lawyer of star witness Nabil B. He plays an important role in the liquidation process of top criminal Ridouan Taghi. The 44-year-old lawyer was shot dead on September 18, 2019 at his home in Amsterdam-Buitenveldert.

Conviction

According to the court, the suspects worked closely together in the preparation and execution of the murder plan. It has not been conclusively established which of the two fired the fatal shots. According to the court, that does not matter; both are equally responsible.

The court did not agree with the demand of the Public Prosecution Service because the men had not previously been convicted of murder or manslaughter and because it concerns a single murder. The maximum temporary prison sentence is thirty years.
