Public Prosecution Service Demands 3.5-Year Prison Sentence for Roy B. in Orlando Boldewijn Case

On Tuesday, the Public Prosecution Service demanded a 3.5-year prison sentence against Roy B. The justice department considers him responsible for the death of Orlando Boldewijn, because B. did nothing when the seventeen-year-old boy ended up in ice-cold water and drowned.

The now 33-year-old B. had arranged to meet Orlando in The Hague on the evening of February 18, 2018 via the dating app Grindr. They spent the evening in B.’s house on an island. The suspect later dropped Orlando off on shore.

Presumably because Orlando had left his public transport chip card with B., he could not return home. He was unable to get in touch with B.. At some point the boy ended up in the ice-cold water. It is unclear how that happened.

The Public Prosecution Service believes it can prove that B. saw the victim drown. The suspect has previously given varying statements about this. B. stated, among other things, that he was in a panic and therefore did nothing. “He could have saved him,” says the attorney general.

B. is said to have offered him no help and also to have concealed the fact that he had drowned. It was only a week later that Orlando’s body was found thanks to an anonymous tip.

The suspect invoked his right to remain silent at the Court of Appeal in The Hague. In 2020, the court sentenced B. to 44 months in prison. The suspect appealed. The Public Prosecution Service is now demanding the same prison sentence as the first time.

Strafeis is the minimum that relatives hoped for

Victim lawyer Sébas Diekstra represents Orlando’s mother. He says that this sentence for his client is “about the minimum she had hoped for”.

“The mother had promised Orlando after his death that the suspect would not get away with this. If this sentence is imposed, she feels she can finally fulfill this promise,” said Diekstra.
