The Public Ministry makes available to the operators of the justice system, magistrates, lawyers, specialists and citizens, the results of the investigation called ‘Criminological factors that would explain the risk of feminicide: foundations for the generation of prevention alerts’, prepared by the Crime Observatory of the Public Ministry.
The Prosecutor of the Nation (i), Juan Carlos Villena Campana, highlighted the importance of academic work and warned that violence against women constitutes a serious public health problem, one of its structural causes being the gender inequality that persists in the societies around the world. Femicide represents the most visceral form of this violence.
She stated that this research document allows, based on fiscal experience and available information, to weigh the factors that trigger violence against women and determine an early warning mechanism in order to activate protection measures for potential victims.
Villena Campana explained that the results of the aforementioned investigation have made it possible to identify those characteristics of the victims and defendants, the link between victim and defendant, as well as the characteristics of the social control of criminal behavior, as relevant factors that would explain the risk of feminicide in the country.
He added that, in addition, they have allowed the Public Ministry to develop a computer system that helps identify alert situations and allows urgent attention to cases that, due to their characteristics, are identified with a greater probability of the occurrence of a feminicide. The objective is to strengthen actions to prevent and reduce impunity.
Likewise, the Attorney General highlighted the work carried out throughout the country by the Prosecutor’s Offices Specialized in Violence Against Women and Members of the Family Group and the Protection and Assistance Units for Victims and Witnesses (UDAVIT) in favor of women victims of violence.
