Public Health Could Be Threatened, Time for BPA Risk Labeling

The risks of food packaging made of polycarbonate plastic, especially in bottles and baby eating utensils and gallons of drinking water, have been the talk of the world since the early 90’s. But unfortunately the public in the country has not been much aware of the bad effects of its use.

Polycarbonate plastics, readily identifiable by Recycling Code 7 on plastic packaging, rely on the chemical compound Bisfenol-A, often exposed to BPA, in the production process. Functioning to make plastic strong, easy to mold and heat resistant, BPA has its own disadvantages, namely prone to disintegration due to heat exposure and friction.

According to a pediatrician, dr. Farabi el Fouz public knowledge of the dangers of BPA is very important considering that if it is exposed to the body and accumulation occurs over a long period of time it can cause serious illness.

“People can get cancer, hormonal disorders, coronary heart disease, diabetes, immune disorders, and enzyme abnormalities in the liver, and others,” he said.

Farabi said abroad many countries have officially banned the use of polycarbonate plastics that contain BPA. Prohibitions include feeding bottles, food containers, plates, spoons, and even cans of baby milk that contain BPA.

The same thing was revealed by a pediatrician who is also a member of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association, Irfan Dzakir Nugroho. According to him, the toxicity of BPA has long been a concern of many countries, especially in European and American countries.

“BPA toxicity causes various diseases, the effect is very wide in various groups. There have been many studies that prove this, and to prevent it, preventive regulations are needed that keep people away from the dangers of BPA,” he said recently.

According to Irfan, many studies abroad prove that the dangers of BPA are related to hormonal disorders, cancer, neurological diseases and obesity.

BPA, he said, referring to a number of studies, is also suspected to trigger human behavior disorders, especially in children. In addition, the character of BPA which resembles estrogen in the body is prone to triggering disorders of the development of sexual organs in children.

He suggested preventive measures in the form of avoiding the use of products containing BPA and giving breast milk directly and reducing food consumption in plastic packaging, and not heating food in plastic packaging in microwave.
